报告摘要:
Modern

large structures of built environment, including high-rise buildings and long road tunnels etc. are with complicated internal structures and environmental control systems. With the increasing numbers of high-rise buildings and road tunnels across the world, particularly in China, their fire protection and smoke controls are becoming more challenging nowadays. The problem is more complicated by the requirements from performance-based designs and/or the increasing needs of energy saving and renovations that may often interfere with fire safety concerns. Within these contexts, this presentation reports the most recent research developments from our group on the new analytical, experimental and numerical simulation techniques aiming to tackle these challenges with a focus on high-rise buildings and long road tunnels. We will also introduce a new technique of using the numerical weather forecasting model of Ensemble Kalman Filter to forecast fire smoke dispersion by combining the measurement data from multiple sensors in multi-room compartments with numerical simulation data for real-time fire protection.

报告摘要:
Understanding
physics of heat and mass transfer inside large vertical spaces is a major challenge for high-rise fire safety. Due to the size of a high-rise building, experimental studies based on sub-scaled models play an important role in high-rise heat and mass transfer research. Froude modeling method is probably the most common approach for sub-scaling. It does not consider heat transfer at the building boundaries, and may limit its application in cases where there exists significant heat transfer between smoke and the boundaries. In this presentation, a new modeling method, Froude-Stanton modeling is introduced, in which heat transfer is taken into consideration in the energy balance equation. A case study on a 17-story institutional high-rise building located at the downtown Montreal (Canada), is introduced. The building is sub-scaled 1:100 using the proposed scaling method. Whole-building numerical simulation on the full size and small size buildings are conducted, the results of which are compared.
